Mahn Sha, the general secretary of the Karen National Union (KNU) was shot dead on Thursday afternoon at his home in Mae Sot, Thailand, according to KNU sources.David Takapaw, the joint-secretary of the KNU, told The Irrawaddy on Thursday that Mahn Sha was shot by two unknown gunmen on Thursday at about 4:30 p.m. in his home near the center of Mae Sot.
According to the only eyewitness, a Karen girl, the two men pulled up in front of the house in a black car. “The two men climbed the stairs of his home and said ‘good evening’ (in Karen language) to Mahn Sha.”
“Then they shot him twice in the left side of his chest. He died immediately,” the girl added.Mahn Sha was general secretary of the KNU, which has faced serious internal conflicts since the death of its charismatic leader, Gen Saw Bo Mya, in December 2006.Majoring in history at Rangoon University in 1962, Mahn Sha joined the Karen movement in the jungle at the Thai-Burmese border as soon as he finished his studies. He was seen as one of the leading lights in the KNU and was being groomed to take over the troubled KNU leadership. He was 64.The KNU has been plagued with recent conflicts. Last year, Maj Gen Htain Maung, former leader of the KNU’s 7th Brigade, signed a ceasefire agreement with the Burmese military regime. This was seen as yet another blow to KNU leaders who lost their fortified headquarters at Manerplaw to the Burmese army in 1995.
There have recently been several attacks and assassination attempts between mainstream KNU members and the breakaway 7th Brigade, now known as KNU/KNLA Peace Council.Last month, Colonel Ler Moo, the son-in-law of breakaway leader Htain Maung, was killed in a bomb attack while sleeping at a communications office near the group’s headquarters. He had earlier survived an assassination attempt in April 2007 while crossing the Moei River by boat.Mahn Sha was involved in ceasefire talks with the Burmese military regime in the past. He was highly respected among both ethnic and Burman allies. The Burmese regime saw him as a strong leader in the KNU who repeatedly called for genuine political dialogue. He is survived by two daughters and a son.

No one believes that you are gone forever leaving us with your passion, determination, and hope that you had dreamed and we have dreamed.
No one hoped that this would have happened to a leader like you because simply your are with us, with them, and with everyone who dream for justice, equality, and freedom.
Everyone knows that Karen and democratic forces alike are integrated and cooperated under the vision you had built with other leaders for many years in a deep jungle where only heroes are born. This dream and hope will last forever.
Pado… So sad you are not there anymore.
At this moment, if there was a word that you left for us, what would that be?
Dear Ah Ba,
I salute you. What you did for the country and people will not never be faded away. All your efforts for Free Karen and Burma is written in the heart of our unfinished revolution. Even though you passed away, you will be always with us.
Khun nawng
Padoh,
Although you have just left from this chaotic world and your lovely Grand Revolution,
No one from us will forget you, your sprits, your endeavors and your maneuvers.
You are one of Modern Heroes who never dies.
You with us and with the movement and your dreams will come true, Padoh,
Salute.

Tee,
It was shocked that someone called me in the morning (in eastern standard time) telling the bad news. Padoh Mahn Sha was assassinated at 4:30 PM at Thai standard time. I don’t want to believe and I still don’t want to accept it.
With great respect and salute.
Aung San Myint
In the end of ones life, we must come to terms with the actions that defined our existance. For most of us, family and friend would be the lasting impression of our time on Earth. For others, maybe a piece of art work or sheet of music; But for the truly blessed their legacies transend past their own time in to the conscience of a higher cause. Pa Doh Mahn Shar; this will be your legacy. To be carried on by the children who now bear your burden of justice and equality.
To his family, stay strong in the face of this tradgedy with the knowledge that while he may be gone his ideals live on.
The All Burma I.T. Students Union salutes your life and mourns your passing.

MY CONDOLENCE TO P’doe Mahn Shah,
Old soldier never dies. You had completed your revolutionary task with a heroic death. It is an inspiration for all of us to march forward following your example. We shall continue to struggle for the liberation of all the people of nationalities of Burma., we promise you.
Your comrade in arms, Saw Jacob.
Hero never die. You will become a star which will be shining on the blue sky forever. The people who love peace and justice will never forget you and your works.
I salute you with my sincere respect.
Wishing your sprit be in peace!
The history of “THE GREAT MAN” for fighting against the absolute military dictatorship in Burma for decades tells to encourage us from next generations to next generations to continue the-maybe-long-way for our rights and Democracy. Your shining democratic spirits are always blossoming amongst us and the ethnic youths.
Moments of grief follow this great loss, but a long journey of national struggle with sacrificial determination will have to accompany this national crisis, which is painfully manifested in the coward act of two assassins.
Perhaps a scene that illustrates this painful, mind-numbing state is from the photographs of the great fallen hero. And, this is also a grief that breaks the heart and wounds the soul; that lasts and shatters in a minute, and then, will inspire the nation for a lifetime.
Pa Do….
I am the one who you met in a corner of your long journey for the liberation movement. I am certain to say that you will always live in the mountains of our hearts in the rain of tears, but your liberation movement will continues until all people in Burma can enjoy freedom, justice, and independence.
Yesterday, I walked with you and you told me how much you care, but today, you are gone without telling me that you would come back one day. How could I understand this has happened to you? My soul is full with tears as I think about our last moment together. Tee, as you know your spirit and Words will always be with me, and you will always be missed in my heart.
Padoh Man Sha,
Your love is like the moon that calms our heart and you’re like the stars in the sky directing us to the right path of our long journey to peace, justice, and independence. Even though you’re not here with us, your words and your dreams will always be in our fresh, blood, and heart.
You will be remembered for the eternity
Pa Dho
You had completed the historic duty for the people of Burma.
Your bravery, honesty, loyalty and leadership are ideal for us and future generations.
Though your body left the world, your soul is forever with us who love UNITY, JUSTICE and PEACE.
You never die.
Great Lost to all of us. Rest In Peace.
Phado,
Together with your national flag and ours, we will march to the dawn.
When we lose our leaders and cormades, we will work hard and take more respnsibilities.
Together with your spirit, we will rise up again and again—-
Heroes never die, but there is no place for coward terrorists in our society.
Tgether with your spirit,————
please rest in peace for now.
Aung Moe Win
Pa Dho,
The loss of you is not only to the Kayin, but also to the people of Burma who want to build a true Union. Your political ideologies are different from other ethnic leders but nicer, better and newer. That is why you earned the admiration of the people. You are a role model for all of us.
With great respect
Kyaw Tin Maung
Apart from saying sorry nothing much I can do now,
Just I can pray for peace and equality any any other things that we really need were delivered soon , too soon.
No more die and no more pain for us.
It is more than enough for every single one.
God bless you Pha Hti
It is one of most tragic event in Burmese political history. It reminds me of assassination of Gen. Aung San and his colleagues…It reminds me that how much violent culture still dominates in solving the conflicts. He is great leader of freedom movement and he is key player in making allegiance between democratic movement and ethnic’s freedom struggle. It is great loss for Burma and incompensable.

Tee Pa Doh,
Your legacy of determination, strength, and commitment for the freedom of our people, the Karen, will be carried on by us–the next generation. They can only kill your body but not your spirit, for your spirit lives on in each one of us. May you rest in peace.

It’s a huge loss for the history of Burma and the Karen’s revolution. But our struggle would never be stopped to reach our goal to liberate our country and the people.

Pha Htee, you done the right things for our country. So I honor you. May you attain Nibbana.
You had to pay with your life for a long struggle to obtain freedom, democracy and human rights for your country which were dear to your heart.
Our thoughts are with you in the spiritual world to which you have passed.
May you be with all the people endeavouring to continue your noble task and may you inspire them with wisdom and strength.
A Tee,
I’m still in denial that your body has left us. I still owe you to give you the answer to what you asked me when we last met right at the very place where the two brainless men took your life. You asked me a series of questions and the last one was this: What do you think, as a new generation, are the most important things the Karen people should do at this point in history? I told you that I’ll think about it carefully and get back to you.
We will continue as your spirit lives on until and beyond all the people on our mother land can live with freedom and dignity and the right to self-determination, i.e., their social, political, cultural and economic rights.
Respectfully,
Yours
I offer my deepest condolences for the death of a great and brave man. As we say in Eire, Tiocfaidh ár lá Amd your day will come.
Once i heard the word “Self-determination” from Tee Mahn Shar during my Leadship and Management course.
The word came straight to my mind and walked me through the details of what i have to revenge against the brutal Burmese military junta who has deprived the Karen and other ethnic minorities freedom.
One evening i unexpectedly heard a bad news from my friend which said ” Tee Mahn Shar breathed his last breath ” in the Thursday 04:30 PM.
We have known and seen what you’ve done and we promise we will continue what you and all the people are expected for.
Your words and encouragement will be with us forever.
We are not alone in our struggle and we will firmly keep the four principles of Saw Ba U Gyi in our heart.
Dear Pa Doh,
I believe, you are in heaven with God because God is truth. You believe the truth and the truth shall make you free now. Our beloved Pa Doh, we believe, you spirit will be continue to show us, the way of freedom and the will of freedom. Don’t want to say goodbye, see you!

We all loss a good leader for ever.
The road democracy always alive.
I never see and talk with Padohmahnshar but i love and respect him. i saw his photos and heard his voice from radio when someone interviewed him only. i know he is an intelligence and valuable person. Many old and young Karen people also other ethnics people was killed every days in 60 years, by mahabama armies. Remember Karen people will still alive till the end of the world. Never forget what you do and what you had done.
You are in our heart. and you will be there forever.
You are the greatest man alive.
We love you.
I Feel so sad. That’s all I can say at the moment.
You are one of the greatest heroes for the Karen people, Burmese, and other ethnic minorities too. You have the great notable status like Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. People around the world mourn your death and will remember you. Thanks for your help for fighting for democracy for the Karen people and Burma itself.
I never met Ti Mahn Sha in real. Only in newspaper and books. But i admire him alot. Now where can i find his life words and pictures?????????
God bless Ti Mahn Sha’s family and all of our people!
Ti P’doh, when I saw you last time during sixth national seminar at military centre, you were sitting, answering questions and giving suggestion with full of hope. After two weeks I saw you again at the same place. This time, you were not sitting, answering and giving suggestion. But you were lying straight without breathing. There was a big picture of you set beside your bed. During taking picture of both animate and inanimate inside the building, I was shocked and amazed while my camera lens turned to your still picture. Your picture seemed like you were sitting and talking with us. I couldn’t control my self anymore.
Ti, Not only me but also people inside and outside the building were like me. The feeling of sympathy, depressed and want to have you were shown in their eyes.
I still remember your words at the 4th, 5th and 6th Karen Nation Unity Seminar and those words will stay in my mind until my last breath.
“Why do we need to maintain Saw Ba U Gyi four principles,
Economic can destroy our unity,
Future Burma’s federal system,
young people see that old people maintain power”
we need to be aware of the name “Karen” that shouldn’t be other nation name,
and other important messages are still sound in my ears and stay in my brain memory.
Ti, there are many duties that you left for us and we have to carryout them. We will never give up in our struggle. We’ll try until our or your dream comes true. As you are our martyr, your mind will definitely be in ours.
Dear ! Ah Par
U have stayed in unjust country ,but now U can stay in peace. That’s why stay in pease we will continue to fight for our freedom.
Good Bye Ah Par !

Although it has been several months since the sad event commemorated here, I just found this site and would like to express my heartfelt sorrow for P’doh Manshar’s family, all the Karen people, and all the brave people of Burma.
You have lost a great leader, but these messages make clear that his life was an inspiration to all the peace-loving souls struggling for peace and justice for all in Burma. My love and best wishes to P’doh Manshar’s family and all who will carry on his great work.
Karen killing Karen. Never ending story till every Karen is dead. Burmese are laughing their arses off?

ABOUT THE PHAN FOUNDATION
The Phan Foundation was founded by the four children of Padoh Mahn Sha, the General Secretary of the Karen National Union, and Nant Kyin Shwe, in their memory.
The Foundation aims to fight poverty and provide education for Karen people from Burma, who have suffered decades of oppression. It also aims to protect and promote the culture of the Karen, a culture which is being systematically destroyed as part of the Burmese regime’s policy of ethnic cleansing. In meeting its objectives, the Foundation will, in particular, focus on young people, encouraging and supporting a new generation of grassroots activists who will work to help their people.
THE AWARD
Each year the Padoh Mahn Sha Young Leader Award will be granted to a young Karen person who has shown outstanding leadership and dedication in areas such as fighting poverty, promoting education, promoting development, and preserving Karen culture.
An award of two thousands dollars will be given to the organisation or community for whom that person works. The winner of the award will be announced on Karen Resistance Day, 31st January.
